Story Cartel: Is it worth it?

So I've been going through a few experiments, trying to figure out what works and what doesn't with promotion and platform and whatnot. One of my experiments was Story Cartel. Story Cartel is a website that offers your book for free for 20 days and encourages the downloaders to leave a review. To help entice the downloaders into reviewing the author also has to offer some kind of giveaway to those that leave reviews. So, although the service is free, it does end up costing you around $30 to utilize.

I chose to go with Story Cartel because Heart Like an Ocean is not a new release and I really want to get the number of reviews up--in the 20s would be nice. So, my goal from using this tool was to get to 20+ reviews.

So far, I'm unimpressed.

In the 20 days it was offered for free it had nearly 50 downloads. This is great. If just a third of the people left reviews I'd be basically at my goal of 20. But, the free period has been over for awhile and so far only about 4 reviews have rolled in. Yep, out of 47 downloads only 4 reviews. Now, there obviously could be more coming, but this really wasn't what I was hoping for.

If the reviews do come in, my opinion of this website/tool may change. But, as it stands right now I'm really disappointed and probably won't be using it again. In the future, I'll be offering ARC (Advance Readers Copies) for my new releases to certain people to get a good start on review numbers.

Have you used Story Cartel? How were your results?

How I did last week:

Writing: I've been writing by hand so I'm not really sure how much writing I got done, but it feels like it's flowing okay and if I had to guesstimate I'd say around 2,000 words on Betrayed by the Ocean. No new edits came in for Unforgiving Plains so I didn't have to do anything with that. I'm a little behind on chapter 10 of Owned by the Ocean but it will be up tomorrow, never fear :)

Pregnancy: 35 weeks!

House: FINALLY got our wood island top for the breakfast area! I'm so happy! And Stucco guys are working outside right now :D

Goals for this week:

Writing: 500-1000 words a day on Betrayed. Edit chapter 10 and 11 of Owned. Review any new edits for Unforgiving Plains that comes in.

Pregnancy: 1 week minimum! 5 weeks till due date! 7 weeks maximum!

House: How about I just make a list of things that need to be done yet?

  • Stucco- Being done
  • Brick on fireplace
  • Glass door for shower
  • Pour driveway
  • Drywall garage
  • Landscape?
  • Drywall utility room downstairs.

Have a great Monday, everyone :)
