Book Review: She Belongs to Me

She Belongs to Me is a romance/thriller/mystery by fellow 5 Prince Publishing author, Carmen DeSousa.

After secrets and a mysterious background leave a wife’s life hanging by a thread, a husband must look for answers in the only place he knows—the past.

I want to start this review by saying I loved this book. The format was very refreshing, starting with a bang (literally) and bringing us right into the action, but at just the right moment the story steps back and moves into the past, drawing us into Jaynee and Jordan's lives and making you sympathize even more with the fearful and grieving husband.

With this format of flipping back and forth between past and present there are two traps that are so easy to fall into. One, liking one storyline over the other and being tempted to skip ahead to the present or past. The other is confusing the readers and not differentiating the different timelines well enough. Carmen DeSousa does not fall into either trap. She skillfully weaves the plot of this book and keeps you interested page after page.

Although this book is not a Christian Romance, Jaynee and Jordan (the main characters) both very obviously hold to a christian faith, and talk about it openly more than once. However, it is not too in-your-face so if you aren't a fan of christianity in books it can easily be ignored. However, I know many of my readers do enjoy a good christian novel so I can tell you that this book holds to those morals for the most part, if not an outright Christian Romance.

Closely related to this last point is my one and only complaint about the whole book: I felt as if the Christianity was an excuse to "get married fast so that the characters can get busy (if you know what I mean)." So, in that way the Christian content was a little disappointing. But, if I overlooked that and took the book for what it was, a romance, I could forgive that one annoyance. Things happen fast in romances, they usually have to. And the fact that the story spans about 4 years and shows you a lasting, committed relationship instead of just a whirlwind romance, makes it all the more concrete in my mind.

In the past I haven't given books a star rating, but I'm going to start now (and possibly go back and edit the other reviews with them). I'm going to give this book 4 out of 5 stars. I would have given it a full 5 but with one small complaint it was brought down to a 4. And, if that's not enough, this book has been on the Amazon best sellers list. That speaks for itself.

So, here's a little blurb about the book and some links for more information and where this book can be found. :) She Belongs to Me is available in ebook and print format. I've included the amazon kindle link but for any other formats you can find the links on the 5 Prince Publishing website, which I've also included. I hope you pick up this book and support my fellow author. She has two other books out now that I'm hoping to read soon.

When wealthy construction company owner and Charlotte detective, Jordan Monroe, meets Jaynee for the first time he is awestruck and determines to make her his wife. Jaynee, however, has a history she cannot easily overcome and is fearful to submit to love. Jordan succeeds in making her his wife, but five years into their marriage, he realizes she is keeping secrets.  Before he can decipher her duplicity, he discovers her unconscious in their home from a gunshot wound only hours after giving her an ultimatum concerning their relationship.
With Jaynee’s life hanging in the balance, the mystery of her past drives Jordan to investigate. But what appears to be an attempted suicide turns out to be something far darker. Is someone from her past stalking her? Or worse, is someone close to Jordan trying to kill them both? As Jordan edges closer to the truth, it may be deadlier than he could ever have imagined.
